Victoria Bond was the 2009 winner of the Hinrichsen Award. The Walter Hinrichsen Award, established in 1984 by C.F. Peters Corporation and presented via the auspices of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, is given for the publication of a work by a gifted mid-career American composer.

This botanically-inspired edition harmoniously includes the clever corresponding collaborative poems by Kenneth Cooper and the composer, along with the fantastical, decorative artwork of Lauren Wisbauer Nuzzi.

Felt that plant life was in chaos;
So he organized a system
Which would classify and list ‘em.
His splendid garden – not in Eden,
But somewhere in the depths of Sweden –
Labels all things wild and planted,
And though tourists are enchanted,
It’s a gift to modern botany –
That is, if he’s not forgot any.
Once the plants were neatly seeded,
Clearly something more was needed.
While absorbed in contemplation,
We had a sudden revelation:
Music is the fourth dimension,
And deserves our full attention;
So we gave our plants a voice,
Making harpsichord the choice.
