Jonathon Dove's Opera Premieres in Three European Cities
Jonathon Dove's opera The Monster In the Maze, a co-commission by the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, and the Festival d'Aixe-en-Provence, made its premiere in Berlin, London, and Provence between June 20th and July 9th. Sir Simon Rattle and Simon Halsey headed the co-commission and Alasdair Middleton supplied the libretto. The commission's purpose is to develop a community program that results in a collaboration of professional music organizations and their amateur musical community.
The simple storyline of the Greek myth of the Minotaur allows the ensembles to focus on producing high quality performance. For educational and research purposes, an Artist Academy was developed to allow members of the casts to be intimately involved with the production. The casts from each city visited the other productions and engaged in forums to discuss the process. A blog was created on the main website to allow members to open an international dialogue for future encouragement. Finally, a conference was held in London that allowed professional organizations to study the progress of the opera and encourage further efforts of participatory performances.
The positive reviews and comments from the conference and premieres indicate that further endeavors of The Monster in the Maze and other participatory performances are forthcoming.
