Wild Flow At The Proms

Ulster Orchestra premiere new Hellawell work
Hellawell’s new work for orchestra opens Prom 47 in a programme further consisting of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5 and Haydn’s Cello Concerto No.1 with cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan. Wild Flow is a sequence of five orchestral pieces whose central item is a sustained slow movement surrounded by four pieces contrasted by energy. Like his other multi-movement works, especially those in his series of Sound Carvings, this offers a zig-zag progression of mood and event, contrasting with the familiar Classical balance of Haydn and the cumulative progression of Tchaikovsky’s symphonic design that completes the programme.
