Originally commissioned in 2008 by Gerald Montier (formerly of New York City Opera), the opera premiered in Madrid, Spain in 2014 with Teatro Real. A new production of the opera that uses a 24-player chamber orchestra premiered in Salzburg in 2015, which will be the production that The New York City Opera will use. Kazem Abdullah will conduct after conducting the German premiere of the piece in 2014. Original author Annie Proulx, contributed the libretto after she was approached by Wuorinen following a viewing of the acclaimed 2005 film.
