Edition Peters is delighted to announce the signing of British composer, David Sawer, to an exclusive publishing agreement, with future works being published by Peters Edition, London. Sawer’s new work for 14 players, Caravanserai, will mark the beginning of the relationship, premiering with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group at the CBSO Centre on 18 November 2018.

Noted for his precision and purity of vision, Sawer studied at the University of York and won a scholarship to study in Cologne with Mauricio Kagel. A former Composer-in-Association with the Bournemouth Orchestras, he is a Fulbright-Chester-Schirmer Composition Fellow, an Arts Foundation Composer Fellow, and a Paul Hamlyn Foundation award winner whose works are heard regularly in concert halls and opera houses throughout the UK and Europe.

April/March, an RPS Drummond Fund commission which premiered with the London Sinfonietta at the 2016 BBC Proms, will feature in the new Linbury Theatre in February 2019 with a new choreography by Aletta Collins for the Royal Ballet. Key elements of variation, repetition and development informed Sawer and Collins as they built the structure of the music and dance movements, with the title referring to a Jorge Luis Borges story telling of a novel that unfolds backwards through time.

Sawer’s music is a natural fit for the theatre and he has frequently found himself collaborating with directors and playwrights, including Edward Bond and Richard Jones for companies including The Young Vic and Royal Shakespeare Company. He has written four operas, each unique in character and scale. Most recently, The Skating Rink, for Garsington Opera, opened to 4- and 5-star reviews and was described as “spectacularly eclectic” and “an utterly compelling experience”.

Sawer is currently writing How Among the Frozen Words, a new work for 24 singers and bassoon which sets the endangered Evenki language. The piece will receive its premiere with the BBC Singers in the 2019/20 season.
